HLB values are given to indicate as a guide to the emulsification characteristics of the surfactant. Values from 1 to 9 indicate water in oil emulsifiers.Values from 9 to 17 indicate oil in water emulsifiers. There is some overlap of characteristics in the 6 to 10 range.Cloud points of 1% aqueous solutions are given to indicate the working temperature range of the surfactant.
